Storm Sewers Gowanus Canal
SRE Engineering, D.P.C. served as a sub-consultant providing construction management, inspections and community outreach services for SEK20065 and SEK20067. Working closely with NYCDEP and NYCDDC, this project included the installation of high-level storm sewers, new catch basins, manholes, and chambers, along with the replacement of aging water mains. This $52.9M project included the installation of high-level storm sewers, new catch basins, manholes, and chambers, along with the replacement of aging water mains. Full restoration of roadway alignment, concrete sidewalks, and curbs was completed to ensure improved pedestrian access and drainage flow. SRE Engineering’s inspection team ensured compliance with NYCDEP and NYCDDC standards throughout construction, while the CCL facilitated coordination between contractors, residents, and businesses to minimize disruption. Work spanned 3rd Avenue between Douglass Street and Carroll Street — including Denton Place — a corridor critical for both residential life and commercial activity. The completed upgrades now provide improved stormwater management, reduced surface flooding, and better water quality outcomes for the Gowanus neighborhood. By modernizing underground systems and restoring surface-level conditions, the project supports both immediate community needs and long-term urban resilience in one of Brooklyn’s most environmentally significant areas.
