Green Infrastructure Queens Bioswales & Rain Gardens

SRE Engineering served as the major subconsultant providing construction inspection and community liaison services for this $44 million NYCDDC and NYCDEP-sponsored green infrastructure initiative across Queens. Spanning two concurrent contracts — GCTI-1002 and GCTI-1003 — the project delivered over 1,500 combined green infrastructure assets, including bioswales, rain gardens, and infiltration basins, targeting chronic stormwater runoff and flooding across the Flushing Creek Tributary Area. SRE's team also rigorously tracked and verified the installation of over 1,000 trees across multiple species in coordination with NYC DPR, ensuring every planting met exact agency specifications. Across GCTI-1002 and GCTI-1003, SRE inspected the installation of over 1,500 green infrastructure assets including ROW Bioswales, Infiltration Basins, and ROW Greenstreets. Standard structures inspected included steel-faced and reinforced concrete curbs, historical granite curb, concrete sidewalks, roadway pavement, soil and stone installation, and protective tree barriers. SRE's REI responsibilities included monitoring contractor work and safety permits, verifying compliance with NYCDDC, NYCDEP, and NYSDOT standards, maintaining documentation and progress meetings, and flagging and resolving all non-conforming work with DDC. A critical component of SRE's scope involved the rigorous tracking and verification of over 1,000 trees planted across both project areas in coordination with NYC Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR). Plantings spanned a diverse mix of native and climate-adaptive species per DPR-approved plans, selected to support urban biodiversity, canopy coverage, and long-term ecological resilience. SRE's inspectors maintained detailed logs for every tree, confirming species identity, caliper size, planting depth, root ball preparation, and soil backfill against exact DPR requirements — ensuring 100% compliance with agency specifications.
